Questions to ask a solar panel installation companyOnce  homeowners have decided they are interested in going solar, they will interview at least three solar installation companies before they choose the one they want to hire.  Unfortunately, some homeowners  make the mistake of choosing the solar installation company that gives them the lowest quote without considering that lower pricing may have hidden costs down the road. With this in mind, here are eight questions homeowners should ask solar installation sales representatives to help ensure they will get the most out of their home solar system.

- Is the solar installation company  locally owned and operated? This can be a tricky question because if the company is part of a huge chain, they may have sales offices or salespersons in the area but everything else is handled out of state. If their headquarters is located out of state, ask the sales representative how responsive they will be to your needs once your system is installed and throughout the installation process.

- Will they let you call anyone from their customer list at random for an unrehearsed, unbiased reference? If they won’t let you do that, you might want to ask yourself why they will only let you call customers they have cherry picked ahead of time.

- What is their current rating on Angie’s List, Guild Quality, Better Business Bureau and Solar Reviews?  These are all reputable, independent customer review sites.

- Does their company’s office or facility run on solar power and will they let you see the system up close? If not, why not?

- Are their installers fully trained and certified full-time employees of  their company or do they subcontract their installers? When headquarters are located out of state, companies usually hire subcontractors to do the installations. Sometimes local companies do this too. If you want to make sure you have guaranteed quality control for your installation, this is a very important question to ask.

- Where are the solar panels they install manufactured? Are they high efficiency panels or low efficiency? Cheaply made solar panels do not give homeowners as high a return on investment as high efficiency solar panels do.

- How long has the company been in business in your state and how many installations have they done in your area? Each state has different incentives, tax laws and processes so you want to make sure they understand the laws, incentives and processes for solar where you live.

- Will the company handle all the paperwork for SRECs, grants, net metering etc. for you so you will get all your financial incentives and tax breaks – or will you be expected to navigate through all the paperwork and processes on your own? Not all solar installation companies will do this for you, so if you are someone who does not want to have to deal with the bureaucracy, make sure the solar installation company you hire is a full service solar design and installation company.
