Why Scrooge Would Love Solar

By Laureen Peck

Most people are familiar with the famous novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and the main character in it, Ebenezer Scrooge.

Scrooge is famous for being a penny-pinching, greedy miser.  However, by the end of the story he has transformed from a selfish brute into a kind, loving and generous human being.  (If this is a spoiler for a few of you, I apologize but I also recommend you read the book or watch one of the numerous movies based on Dickens’ masterpiece.)

The Scrooge Solar Theory

If Scrooge were a real person who was alive today, I speculate that he would love solar, both before and after his transformation.

Scrooge Before

The main reason Scrooge would love solar before becoming a nice guy is because it would appeal to his desire to squeeze every penny out of every investment he made.

In a nutshell, solar saves people who have it anywhere between 20-100% on energy costs. Plus, assuming Scrooge would prefer to own his solar system, it would also generate income and profits for him from the excess energy it produces.

If saving money and making profits are your biggest goals in life, what’s not to love here?

Scrooge After

But what about after he had his life-changing experience? Would saving money and earning profits mean as much to Scrooge?

I believe he would still like getting those profits but not because they would benefit him personally but because he could use the extra money to buy gifts and take care of others less fortunate than him.

However, my guess is that transformed Scrooge would especially like how great it is for the environment mainly because of his newfound compassion for children in need like his ward, Tiny Tim.

For example, he would understand how cutting back on pollution would benefit the health and well-being of children living in neighborhoods close to coal-fired power plants. Plus, he would have begun to appreciate the simpler things in life like clean air and water.

The Moral of This Blog Post

The moral is simple. Scrooge would love solar no matter which version of himself he was. So, it is likely you would love solar too if you gave it a chance.
